metro Phoenix and southern Arizona August 9th, unleashing destructive winds,
blinding blowing dust, and heavy rainfall. The storms packed fierce wind
gusts ranging from sixty to eighty miles per hour, particularly
punishing the stretch along Interstate eight between Casa Grande and
Gila Bend before sweeping heavily into the Valley. The volatile weather
triggered a flurry of urgent alerts, including severe thunderstorm
warnings for Phoenix, Glendale, and Peoria, alongside blowing dust and
flash flood warnings spanning across Maricopa and Pinal counties.
The extensive property and infrastructure damage was driven primarily by
the sheer force of the winds. Arizona Public Service confirmed that the
severe gusts snapped forty-two power poles across thirteen distinct
sites. This major electrical failure plunged nearly twenty-three
thousand customers into darkness at the height of the outages, with
thousands remaining without power into the morning hours as crews worked
tirelessly to execute repairs and reroute lines. Alongside the downed
infrastructure, the intense storms soaked the region with heavy
downpours, dropped localized hail, and whipped up thick walls of dust
that drastically reduced visibility across local roadways, marking
another dramatic night of Southwest summer weather.
